Every Dylan Song

By Tony Attwood

In May 2017 newspaper articles began to appear saying that Dylan had written 359 songs.

I have no idea where this notion came from, but it seemed completely wrong to me.  So I went through the files on this site and took all the songs we have listed and put them in one simple chronological file, just to be able to count them.  It turns out it under-estimates Dylan’s songwriting total by almost a quarter.

The result is below, and the answer is that, according to my reckoning, we have details of 455 songs that Dylan wrote and which we have details of.  Now I know that this list is not complete, and I am hoping that eventually I will be able to fill in the gaps, so the final total is certainly higher.

But to be quite clear, I am only listing songs that I can find a recording of – either from an official release, or from a TV performance, or an unofficial bootleg.   If you know a song which was written by Dylan and which is available somewhere for us to listen to, and which is not included please do drop me a line, and I will review it (unless of course you want to review it yourself) and put it on our various lists.  If you could give an approximate date of recording that would be helpful too.

Having compiled the list of 456 in the order they were written, I have then put them in alphabetical order, just in case this helps.

The comments in brackets are the start of the process of trying to categorize Dylan’s songs – yet another project that is part way through, but will one day, maybe, be completed.

If you want to drop me a line it is Tony@schools.co.uk or TonyAttwoodofLondon@gmail.com   If you don’t get a reply from one, try the other.

Bob Dylan Year by Year, decade by decade

What is on the site

1: Over 390 reviews of Dylan songs.  There is an index to these in alphabetical order on the home page and an index to the songs in the order they were written in the Chronology Pages.

2: The Chronology.  We’ve taken all the songs we can find recordings of and put them in the order they were written (as far as possible) not in the order they appeared on albums.  The chronology is more or less complete and is now linked to all the reviews on the site.  We have also recently started to produce overviews of Dylan’s work year by year.     The index to the chronologies is here.

3: Bob Dylan’s themes.  We publish a wide range of articles about Bob Dylan and his compositions.  There is an index here.

4:   The Discussion Group    We now have a discussion group “Untold Dylan” on Facebook.  Just type the phrase “Untold Dylan” in, on your Facebook page or follow this link

5:  Bob Dylan’s creativity.   We’re fascinated in taking the study of Dylan’s creative approach further.  The index is in Dylan’s Creativity.

6: You might also like: A classification of Bob Dylan’s songs and partial Index to Dylan’s Best Opening Lines

And please do note   The Bob Dylan Project, which lists every Dylan song in alphabetical order, and has links to licensed recordings and performances by Dylan and by other artists, is starting to link back to our reviews.
